Introduction

Two words of advice for those of you about to embark on a teaching career in Vietnam; LEARN VIETNAMESE. Even if you only learn a few phrases, it will make a huge difference to your time in Vietnam. Yes, the pronunciation is quite tough to begin with, and yes, you will make horrific errors e.g. refer to yourself in the feminine when you are a male or visa versa. But the smiles it will bring to some of the locals' faces will be worth every minute of embarrassment. If you make the effort you will find the Vietnamese will look at you in a whole different way.

The need for Vietnamese in daily life depends upon your level of adventure. For those who frequent the local markets, the range of English is virtually non existent, so a smattering of market based language is imperative. Although English is spoken in the business districts of the cities venturing outside these districts will normally require at least some knowledge of the local language. Charades can normally do it, but take some language with you and the adventure will be that little more real and authentic.

* Note: But beware even if you only know a few words many Vietnamese will think you are fluent and reply in lcoal dialect at 100mph. If this happens just keep nodding and smiling and hope for the best outcome.
