Transportation
Getting around in the cities is easy and cheap, and can also be quite exciting depending on which mode of transportation you choose to take. It is certainly going to be quite different than what you're used to in your home country. Crossing the road on foot between oncoming bicycles, motorbikes, cars and cyclos can be a bit like playing dodge ball, while the thrill of weaving in and out of traffic on a xe-om (motorbike taxi) will keep your eyes wide open and your hands gripped tight to the bike. Or, maybe you’d like to get around in a more traditional style, sitting in a cyclo (a three-wheeled rickshaw) while being pedaled around the city. Bicycling is also a very viable option and good for your health. For those who like to play it extra safe, metered taxis are affordable and easily flagged down in any city.
After living in the city for a while, you just might even decide to be one with the locals and drive yourself around! Buying or renting a motorbike is quite easy and there are plenty of choices depending on what kind of motor you like. From Hondas, Yamahas and Suzuki’s for the smaller scooter style bikes, to classic Vespas and Lambrettas you can find something that is both functional and good looking. If you do choose to drive a motorbike like a local, you need to get a license or just get your driving license from home transferred. No matter if you drive yourself or ride on a xe-om you need to get yourself a helmet since the helmet law went into affect in December 2007.
